Dengue cases down this year

PAPAR (Sabah): A total of 2,688 dengue cases with six deaths were reported in the country this year as of Feb 10, from 5,848 cases, including 20 deaths, during the corresponding period last year, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said.

She said a total of 46,171 dengue cases with 134 deaths were reported last year.

"Although there is a drop in the number of dengue cases and fatalities, it does not mean we can be comfortable," she said at the opening of a gotong-royong programme at Kampung Pengalat Besar near here Tuesday.

As such, she said, more gotong-royong activities should be organised to address the spread of the disease.

She said the Government had taken various measures to overcome the spread of dengue, including efforts to eliminate aedes mosquito breeding grounds, and disseminate information on the dangers of dengue to the public.

Dalglish: Carroll is the future

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish says Andy Carroll is in the right place to realise his "fantastic potential".

The 22-year-old, who won his first England cap in November, insists he has no worries about being the man to replace Fernando Torres with a £35m club record price tag hanging over his head.

And Dalglish, while accepting owners Fenway Sports Group may have had to pay a premium to persuade Newcastle to part with their home-grown striker, is confident it will prove to be a wise investment.

"Andy has not had chance to show us what he can do yet but at 22 he has fantastic potential," said the Reds manager of Carroll, who is a month away from recovery from a thigh injury.

"He is already part of the England squad and for us he is a fantastic signing and is the best person we could have got to play in the number nine shirt.

"At such a young age he wore the number nine at Newcastle, which is a fantastic honour.

"He will wear the nine here and for someone who is 22 that is a lot for him to carry and he showed by what he did at Newcastle he is capable of doing that.

"Anyone who can wear that nine shirt up there and scores goals has got a chance."

Fernando Torres' much-anticipated Chelsea debut ended in disappointment for player and club as Raul Meireles sealed a memorable win for the Spaniard's former Liverpool team-mates.

Meireles hooked home from close range after 68 minutes to take the match - and potentially any lingering title aspirations - from the big-spending Blues.

It was a different story for £50m Torres though, with the most expensive player in British football history hauled off after 65 minutes.

The match was little more than a minute old when he had his first sight of Liverpool's goal, courtesy of a mislaid pass from Maxi Rodriguez.

The Spaniard took a couple of touches towards the edge of the area before aiming for the top corner, but there was too much elevation on the shot.

Liverpool continued to show nerves, Dirk Kuyt giving away possession in the middle of the park after under-hitting his pass to the lively Martin Kelly.

Torres followed suit when he next saw the ball, taking a heavy touch and surrendering possession under pressure from Steven Gerrard.

With Torres partnering Didier Drogba in attack, Nicolas Anelka's role was a more withdrawn one but the Frenchman struggled to create much in the opening 15 minutes.

Ola...my 1st typing blog.
